Job Description

This position is responsible for laying out, fitting, aligning, and assembling structural parts and plates aboard ships and marine vessels. Shipfitters work from blueprints, sketches, and specifications to fabricate, install, and repair metal structures while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.

Job Description:

Shipfitters perform a variety of tasks related to ship construction, repair, and modernization projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, work packages, and specifications.
  • Measure, mark, and lay out materials for fabrication and installation.
  • Fit, align, and assemble structural steel components, bulkheads, foundations, frames, and other shipboard structures.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, grinders, cutting torches, and other fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform tack welding as required to secure components for final welding.
  • Install and remove shipboard equipment, supports, and structural members.
  • Verify dimensions and ensure proper alignment of assemblies prior to welding and final installation.
  • Work in confined spaces, aboard vessels, and in industrial shipyard environments.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including hot work, lockout/tagout, fall protection, and PPE requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisors, welders, and other trades to complete projects on schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of ship fitting, structural fitting, or related industrial fabrication experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and shipyard drawings.
  • Experience using measuring tools, levels, squares, and fabrication equipment.
  • Knowledge of ship repair or NAVSEA standards preferred.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to procedures.
  • Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and maneuver through confined spaces.
  • Capable of standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, and working in physically demanding environments for extended periods.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including but not limited to hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, hearing protection, and fall protection equipment.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Work Schedule & Hours:

  • Full-time position averaging 48–56 hours per week, including weekends.
  • Overtime and extended hours may be required to meet project deadlines.
